Removing Sugar From My Diet – Diet Update


It’s been a while since we’ve talked diets. What I mean by “diets” is what foods I’m currently eating. There’s no dieting here on Create N Plate. But things have changed quite a bit with what I’ve been eating lately due to my never ending digestive struggles. I want to share all about it because what better place to talk about digestion issues than on the internet for anyone to see!? It’s no secret that I’ve been struggling lately though. I’ve mentioned it here and on Instagram but I figured that it’s time to sit down and have a little chat all about it.

Since September I have been really having a tough time. I’ve tried everything to make it better. Literally all of the natural remedies in the world; if you’re able to google it, I’ve tried it. Some of them kind of work, others work for a bit but quickly stop working, and most of them haven’t done anything for me at all. I’ve bought various (very expensive ugh) probiotics and had no success with them. This past month I bought ashwagandha and have been adding it to my tea each night. The ashwagandha has done the most for me, I believe. Unless it’s just a coincidence that things are slightly improving. I can’t be sure so I’ve been crediting the ashwaghanda. But regardless, things still aren’t normal.

It’s extremely frustrating to feel like you’re doing everything “right” and not having your body function properly.

After months of struggling I’ve decided to switch my diet up a bit. I figure that at this point it can’t hurt to try. I’ve given myself a week to think about what exactly I want to switch and experiment with. I’m almost ready to start my experiment.

If you’ve been following me for a while then you know that I was a high carb vegan for a few years. Last year I ditched that and went back to plain ol’ veganism. I haven’t done a “What I Eat In A Day” post for months now but a typical day consists of: a fruity green smoothie breakfast, yogurt or coconut date rolls snack, rice and veggies of some sort for lunch, kombucha and an apple with nut butter snack, some starchy veggie dinner, graham crackers and tea snack. Not bad, right? Well, I don’t know because if it wasn’t bad then why am I having such terrible digestion issues?!

So here’s what’s up. I’m going to eat more veggies. Lots of them. I want to limit my sugars, even the natural fruit sugars for now. Less grains, more greens. More fats and proteins, too. There won’t be anything that I won’t “allow” myself to have. I’ll eat waffles with maple syrup and a big pile of fruit if the opportunity arrises but overall, more veggies and less sugars. Sounds extreme, I know. I have a vision for this and I won’t be eating strictly vegetables. I will make sure I’m eating enough food and a good variety as well.

I just want to heal myself and I will go to any lengths to do so. I’m going to take a little break from bananas. I just finished up my last one the other day. I think I’ve ate a banana almost every single day for 2.5 years now. And in my opinion, too much of a good thing is actually a bad thing. I’ve been doing tons of research and I think that variety will be best for me and taking a break from some of my staples will be a good thing. Breaks are good. I don’t plan to completely eliminate any foods unless I realize that something absolutely doesn’t work for me.

I’m going to do this for about two weeks. Just a small experiment. I want to see if limiting my sugar plus upping my veggies and fats make a difference since I have been eating a diet based in carbohydrates for so long.

So that’s where I’m at with it. I’ll do another update once I finish everything up and let you guys know if I come across any magical healing secrets. But for now just know that if you’re having stomach struggles you’re not alone. I feel you and I know that many others do too. Ultimately I’m doing this experiment for myself but I’m sharing it in hopes that I come across something good to share and hopefully help others with too.

Stay tuned in a few weeks to see how this goes! Wish me luck in my (mainly) banana/fruit free life for the next 14 days. I’m excited to branch out, get creative with my meals, and hopefully make a breakthrough so that I can get back to feeling like a vibrant lil’ sunflower.

  1. Good luck! Sounds like you’ve really thought this through and have a good plan in place. Sugar is tough to cut back on initially, but after reading your blog for ~1 year, it’s clear you are strong, positive, and can quickly adapt to a new healthy way of eating. – Lisa
