Vegan Durian Delight Shake

Hi guys! I don’t think I ever got to tell you all about my durian experience. A few weeks ago I was with my friend and we decided to try durian. We bought it and were super excited to try it. So we ripped it open and was hit with the smell. I wasn’t fond of the smell at all. I’m still not, but I have been able to accept it a little more lately. Anyways, we each grabbed a handful and went for it. We both really disliked it. I brought it home and put it in the freezer because I didn’t want to waste it, but at the same time I didn’t want to eat it. Two or three weeks have passed now and I decided that I was finally ready to make things right with the durian. I still can’t eat it by itself. Although, that is my goal and one day it will happen. That day might not be anytime soon. No worries though, it will happen. Until I am able to fully accept durian as it is, I made this Durian Delight. It’s so thick and creamy just like a “real” milkshake. Mmmm. I love the texture of this. And you can taste the durian, but it’s not nearly as strong as it is when eaten alone. Durian and I have to ease into our relationship and if you feel the same way about it, then try this shake! And if you love durian, try this shake! Everyone needs to try it. I promise that it’s a great way to accept durian into your little family of favorite fruits.

Durian Delight

serves 1

1 banana
1 cup durian, frozen
1 cup almond milk
1 drop vanilla

Blend together until thick and creamy. Serve, enjoy!

  1. There seems to be a lot of durian love (or general dislike, as the case is here xD) going on at the moment! Where are you all getting them from? I’ve never seen (or smelt) one in regular nor specialist stores. I’m becoming increasingly curious to try one… and your smoothie would provide a safe backup in case I didn’t like it:p

    • I found mine in an Asian store in Pittsburgh! It’s the closest place for me (about an hour away) to find exotic fruits. It was kind of pricey! $15. But I recommend trying it. At least once! Let me know if you get to try it. I’m always curious to hear others opinions of it 🙂

  2. You can also buy it out of the shell, frozen, in 1 lb. packages, at most of the stores that sell the frozen in the shell ones. It tends to be less expensive that way. I love it and have to ration myself.
    Tried it as a vegan crepe filling this weekend. Simply divine.

      • In the USA, durian is almost always shipped frozen. It it’s not frozen when you buy it, that means it was almost certainly previously frozen then thawed out.
        If whole durians aren’t being sold from a freezer in the USA, they should be avoided because what the store is doing is putting them out each day than back in their freezer each evening. Repeated freeze/thaw cycles are bad news.
        It’s another advantage of buying the packages. They are always sold from the freezer case, in my experience.

      • This one was in the middle of thawing out when we bought it. I believe that the store I bought it from was probably doing the freeze/thaw cycle but I’m not 100% sure. I’ll definitely check out the freezer section and buy the package next time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
